Undoubtedly one of the best fine dining experiences Nepal has to offer. Both in terms of food and hospitality. A warm experience well worth it.

Incredible dining experience, the amazing food, the impeccable presentation, the creativity, the warm Nepali service, the stunning architecture and design aesthetic all combined to make the most memorable and special experience on our travels in Nepal. The value was exceptional. The hospitality extraordinary. Go!

Beautiful location, varied and delicious menu, wonderful wine choices, and very friendly service. I’ve tried many tasting menus around the world, and this one was on par with some Michelin starred places that I’ve been to. I enjoyed learning about Nepali cuisine and ingredients, and it’s great that the food is locally sourced and seasonal. Each course was unique, and I really enjoyed the wine pairings (I’m a sommelier). The staff were attentive and friendly and I felt that the setting was really cosy.

Tucked away in alleys of Bhaktapur behind red bricks and wooden door is Restaurant Tusa. Wow. The use of Nepalese ingredients into the dishes were phenomenal, seasonal ingredients that respond to the time and also festivals (we visited in early September), meticulously crafted in front of our eyes in the open kitchen. From flavour to texture to cultural significance, Tusa brings together traditional with innovation, buckwheat bread started off the courses super strong, lightly toasted with yak butter with the cured fish. Then the seasonal watermelon, papaya, cucumber salad with buttermilk is refreshing and just cools down the humid 30 degree weather of Bhaktapur. I usually am not a big fan of fish, but Tusa did a great job of combining the smoky flavours and beans and the foam. Then there’s the ferns, plated to perfection, delicately crafted and the crunchiness and the nuttiness of the sauces in combination with the chilli oil just compliments the dish so well. The pear sorbet was served in I believe to be Nepalese bronze bowl, refreshing and so good, it cleanses the palette and was just fabulous. The main course…the puree to the potato tart to the radish and of course the tender meat, well done. The stinging nettle cake, I have to say I will miss it back in Australia, moist, dense but also very aromatic. The Juju Dhau with caramelised pear inside, along side the coconut shaved ice was great as the main dessert, rich but not heavy! Last bites of the lunch had me thinking of how genius one must be to come up with such a combo, dark chocolate coated sea buckthorn jam/puree(?), regardless, that was perfect blend of a little sour kick and the softness of the chocolate. Tusa, well done. Well done.

I went to this restaurant at 7:45pm (their closing time is 8:30pm) and they turned us away since they said that the experience "takes 2 hours". That is okay for them, but not for customers. They should have their "last order" or kitchen closing time at 6:30pm if they close the doors at "8 or 8:30pm". They also could have a "reservation only" policy. But listing that you close at 8:30pm and turning people away nearly an hour before closing is disingenuous, especially if they go out of their way to visit.

Absolutely amazing. I'm so proud to see Nepali cuisine represented at this level. I'll admit, I was a little reluctant to visit at first. As a Nepali, I'm very familiar with the food and wondered how different it could really be. I couldn't have been more wrong. Every dish was beautifully balanced, with flavours that were authentic yet refined. The presentation was exceptional—worthy of any fine dining restaurant. Our host, Vivek, went above and beyond to make us feel genuinely welcome, making the entire experience even more memorable. I've dined at many restaurants offering tasting menus, including several with two- and three-Michelin-star recognition, and this experience genuinely belongs in that conversation—at just a fraction of the price. I'm absolutely delighted to see Nepali food showcased with such creativity, respect, and excellence. It filled me with pride. Without a doubt, this is Michelin-star-worthy.

Honestly, we did not feel warmly welcomed or experience the level of hospitality we had expected. The food was decent, but we believe good hospitality is equally important. As Nepali people, we truly value kindness and warm service, so we were expecting a more welcoming experience. My husband was especially disappointed. We noticed that other staff members were kind and friendly with other customers, but unfortunately, we did not feel the same level of warmth, attention, or service during our visit. Sadly they are not even responding 🤷♀️

We made a reservation, they asked us to come a 6h30 and the restaurant was close. We called them, they apologised they had some exceptional circumstances…. They had our phone number, we confirmed the reservation the day before and they did not even bother to call us..

One of the worst experiences of my life. The food was a calamity, with no taste AT ALL. VERY, VERY disappointing. No texture. No joy. No sexy. Just all very bland. All with a showcasing that should embarrass the entire team. It feels like everything is for show. But when you dig your tooth, it is the absolute nothingness. Seeing how there are other good restaurants in KTM and Nepal, I would say this is a total waste of time. 50 minutes lost to commute from KTM to Bhaktapur. At least the city is a beauty. Great for walking around. Anyway, ZERO WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH FAIRER GRADE. Pity. Their much publicized tapestry of plates just seemed like a boring accumulation of steps. The Rhododendron sorbet was good. Very good, actually. But that is the palate cleanser of the prix fixe menu!!!!!! Waste of 5000+ NPR. DO NOT try the expensive wine pairing if you still decide to go in spite of my review! Over intellectualized. Underseasoned.

This is the best meal I’ve had in a LONG while. Everything from the flavors and local ingredients to beautiful presentations and the history behind each plate make this tasting menu a MUST TRY. They change the menu every couple of months to get the freshest ingredients during each season. The manager, Bibek, made the experience so enjoyable and memorable. Thank you! Will be back for sure every time I’m at Nepal.

Very disappointing experience due to the incorrect opening hours displayed on Google. We planned our afternoon around the schedule shown om maps, only to arrive and find the restaurant are operating on a different schedule. For a fine dining restaurant, accurate information and professionalism are essential. Please update your Google listing so customers don’t waste their time and make plans based on wrong information.

A totally different experience from other restaurants in Bhaktapur. More like a modern western restaurant, yet food with a Nepali touch. Modern and tasteful but sometimes a bit too ambitious. The overall experience though is very good and definitely would visit again. Keep up the good work!

Incredible meal and environment. Tusa is in a beautiful historic home with traditional wood and stone carvings. My husband and I had a table on the inner balcony, where we could watch the chefs in the kitchen. Much care and skill went into the dishes, with ingredients sourced from around Nepal. I’m gluten intolerant, and they handled it so masterfully. Instead of store-bought substitutions for the few things I couldn’t eat (as usually happens) they created unique dishes for me from native ingredients on hand. Each course was delivered with an explanation that made clear they deeply care about Nepal and its many wonderful food offerings. After the meal, one of the staff personally led us to a square where we could pick up our taxi to return to our hotel in Kathmandu. They were all exceptionally gracious, and the meal exceptionally delicious. If you live nearby, you are fortunate! If you’re traveling through like me, it’s worth working Tusa into your day.

There is a restaurant tucked within Bhaktapur's UNESCO heritage streets that deserves the attention of the world. Tusa meaning "new beginning" is not merely dining; it is a manifesto enacted through food. Drawing from Nepal's 118 ecosystems and over 440 wild fruits and herbs, the kitchen transforms foraged ingredients into dishes that taste of this land and nowhere else. Every course tells a story of biodiversity, tradition, and sustainability. This is cooking that reaches backward into forests and traditional fields to create something genuinely forward-looking. The New York Times has long celebrated restaurants that redefine culinary identity, and Tusa belongs in that conversation. It is a serious contender for Michelin recognition not because it mimics European fine dining, but because it achieves what the best restaurants everywhere aspire to: food that could exist nowhere else, prepared with technical precision and profound respect for place. In an ancient city, Tusa feels like the future.

Saw an ad of this place while I’m on the plane to Nepal and decided to give this place a try. Price wise - totally worth it as it is a small fraction of the fine dining experiences I’ve had before. Experience - Find it’s a bit cut short due to the explanation given by the server was not clear, sometime the voice projection were too soft, maybe this is something to improve on. Some dishes like the meatball also came to us in room temperature, not warm which baffled me a bit. On that note, I always view fine dining experiences like this is like telling us patron a story behind every dish, but this time it felt like there isn’t any and I kept coming back to the menu to know more. Ambiance - Deco was nice and traditional, and the restaurant is situated in the middle of housing areas but still quiet. It was winter time and it does gets a bit chilly at night, which having the heater close was a relief, but once it moves around the warmth escapes you. Having said that it does affect the experience a bit. Food taste: while I was quite excited to have my tastebuds tingled by strong spices and explosion of taste, I discovered that the dishes were made in almost earthy/natural taste-like. Maybe it’s Nepali cuisine -Tusa’s take but I doubt I’ll be braging more. Overall the food is delectable, but doesn’t send me off smiling cheek to cheek. However, I do applaud the effort to uplift local Cuisine and wholeheartedly support what they are trying to do. I just had too much expectation!

I really would have liked to be delighted by this dinner in this restaurant in which I went especially to Bhaktapur from Thamel. The overhaul experience was disappointing. The restaurant is settled in a nice old historical building with a small courtyard. The dishes are generally quite bland, even if an effort is made in their presentation. We took the gourmet menu with the wine pairing for the sum of 12,000 nepalese rupees per person (approx 84 $ US). It started with flavourless appetizer canapés. Then the consommé and its meatballs had very little flavour and was served warm. The river fish was also quite bland, far from what one could imagine, Nepal being full of varied spices. The pork-based dish was better but nothing really impressive in terms of taste. The wine was good. In view of the price, the experience was therefore disappointing.

I really wanted to love Tusa. The idea of a 7-course Nepali tasting menu sounded exciting, especially having lived in Nepal for two years, I was curious to see how the chefs would creatively reinterpret its rich culinary heritage. Unfortunately, the experience fell flat. While some of the dishes were nicely presented and had pleasant flavours, there was nothing that truly surprised or evoked the essence of Nepali cuisine. In fact, I left wondering what exactly was Nepali about the meal. The biggest letdown was the lack of substance; there were no carbs included at all beyond a small piece of buckwheat bread at the start. Unsurprisingly, we left hungry. My friend even reached out to the restaurant to ask about this odd omission, and they didn't reply, which only added to our disappointment. For such a high price point, I expected thoughtful food, generous hospitality, and a deeper connection to Nepal’s diverse flavors. Sadly, Tusa missed the mark on all three.

Even if they don't claim it for them, you will find here fine dining in the middle of Nepal. It's a culinaric travel thru the different regions of the country. Was just the perfect summary of my three weeks round trip in one menu. But not like the normal dishes but recombinant of ingredients and high class cooking methods. A hidden gem. The menu is fixed and each day a surprise. Reservation is recommended in advanced (approx 2 days at least) and deposit of half the price (2.500 npr drinks not included) is needed.
